CHARLESTON — The Preston Knights competed in the WV Class AAA State Meet this past weekend and put together a performance that shows the program continues to produce strong results.
The girls’ squad finished with a score of 29 points which was good enough to finish eighth in Class AAA out of 26 scoring teams.
In comparison with the recent past, the Preston girls finished sixth as a team in the 2022 state meet and seventh in 2021.
Sierra Davis placed second in the discus with a distance of 125’ 8” and was fourth in the shot put with a 34’ 0.75” mark.
Ella White scored in four different events for the Knights — twice in individual track events and twice as part of relay teams. The junior placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.27 and took home sixth in the 800-meter run (2:21.42).
The 4x800 relay team of Hallie Simmons, Sophia Saurino, Delilah Myers and White took fourth (9:56.12) and 4x400 relay group of White, Saurino, Simmons and Taryn Veltri raced to sixth (4:12.73).
Jaxon Saucer represented Preston on the boys’ side and placed 12th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.98.
Statewide AAA Results
Irene Riggs (Morgantown) was the high-point winner in the girls’ state meet with 30 points while Jefferson’s Keyshawn Robinson had the top individual boys’ total with a 32.50.
In the girls’ state meet, Jefferson and Morgantown tied for first in points with 111 and were named co-champions. Rounding out the top 10 in scoring were Woodrow Wilson (58), Hurricane (51), Parkersburg (39), Huntington (36.50), Bridgeport (36), Preston (29), University (28) and Spring Mills (26).
