CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Even when she was surrounded by two freshmen and a sophomore, Doddridge County’s Abby McDonough and her teammates in the 4x100 relay were able to win state.
McDonough, freshman Jaycee Lipscomb, freshman Payton Trent and Payton Currey won the 4x100 relay in 52.20. That finish helped the Doddridge County girls track and field team finish as the state runner-up with 120.50 points.
“We work together real well, me and Payton (Trent) do,” Lipscomb said. “Working together as much as we do, it comes together more.”
Trent agreed.
“You have to trust her with the handoff and you have to go for extra space if you can,” Trent said of her and her freshman Lipscomb.
That was behind state champion Williamstown, who won the state title with 173.50 points. It’s the first time McDonough has been a part of a state title on a relay team.
“We are so excited,” McDonough said. “We were super nervous at first, but we got the job done, and we got the state title. We’re going up on the wall.”
South Harrison placed 32nd (1).
