In addition to reading, students participating in Nutter Fort Public Library’s summer reading program will also do do science experiments and other activities, Krupia said.
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Many public libraries in Harrison County are sponsoring summer reading programs beginning next month.
The Bridgeport Public Library will be hosting its program “All Together Now” from June 1-July 27. The program will be open to children, teens, and adults.
Participants will use an app called “Beanstack” to track reading during the program. The program also will feature a QR code scavenger hunt.
In addition to many activities for adults and teens, the Bridgeport Public Library will also host a career day for the kids, Program Director Savanah Draper said.
A full calendar of program events can be found online at www.bplwv.org.
“Anyone who needs help with ‘Beanstack’ can call the Bridgeport Library for help,” Draper said.
The Lost Creek Southern Area Public Library also will host a program titled “All Together Now.”
Lost Creek will use an app called READsquared to log books, Program Assistant Librarian Colleen Linger said.
“The app has word searches, matching and number games, and a customizable avatar and dashboard,” Linger said.
The program at Lost Creek will run from June 8 to July 27. Meetings will be held weekly, alternating Thursday and Tuesday, from 3-4:30 p.m. The READsquared app has a suggested reading list that corresponds with many of the books available at the library.
Those who read the most will be eligible for prizes within the app, Linger said.
The Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library is kicking off its “Find your Voice” reading program on June 10, with a talent show from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Program and Outreach Manager Sarah Blosser said.
Clarksburg-Harrison’s program will utilize the “iREAD” app to track their participants’ reading progress throughout the program.
The program will be open to everyone, with separate programs for children, teens and adults, Blosser said.
The program will feature activities almost every day, ranging from art and poetry classes to dancing, karaoke and community service.
The program will close July 22 with a party on the lawn of the library, when everyone will collect their prizes.
“Those unable to attend can still collect their prizes at the library another day,” Blosser said.
The Nutter Fort Public Library hasn’t decided on a title for its program, but the theme this year will be “myths and legends,” said Assistant Librarian Donna Krupia.
The program will run from 11 a.m.-noon Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 24. After the first week, participants ages 3-6 will meet on Tuesdays, and ages 7-12 on Thursdays.
The first meeting will be June 22 for all participants, as that Tuesday is West Virginia Day, Krupia said.
The reading program at Nutter Fort will not utilize an app, instead opting for a pen-and-paper reading record.
For the younger group, each picture book they read will earn them $1 in “library cash,” which they can spend at the library store to win prizes for reading. The older group of children will earn $1 in “library cash” for each chapter of a book they read.
At the end of Nutter Fort’s program, the library will host a party with an entertainer. The top three readers in each group will win a free pass to the movies, in addition to the prizes they buy with their “library cash.”
