MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — The first round of the ‘Sidewalk Series’ was a walk in the (Mylan) Park for University.
The Hawks (23-10) scored four runs in the second inning and five in the third to stun rival Morgantown (23-7), 13-1, in five innings in the opener of the Class AAA Region I finals at Dale Miller Field.
The two teams will walk a few dozen yards closer to the parking lot to Shilling Field for Game 2 at 5 p.m. on Tuesday; Game 3, if necessary, will be at Monongalia County Ballpark on Wednesday.
Five different Hawks drove in two runs, led by Cody Thomas, who doubled as part of a two-hit game, and Jett Walters, who was 2 for 2 with two runs.
Jake Croston added a solo home run and Gabe Templeton scored twice and doubled.
Zach Harman threw a one-hitter for UHS, going all five innings and striking out three.
After a scoreless first inning, Croston singled, then courtesy runner Park Croyle moved to second on a Templeton bunt.
Gabe Jansen reached on a fielder’s choice, then Walters and Josh Smolkin were hit by pitches to force in the game’s first run.
Brodee Latocha’s grounder scored a run, then Thomas clubbed a two-RBI single to center to make it a 4-0 game.
In the third, Wenkai Campbell was hit by the pitch, then two errors loaded the bases for Jansen, who grounded into a force at the plate.
Walters followed with a two-RBI single, then a walk to Smolkin and another error scored the Hawks’ seventh run.
With two away, Noah Braham singled to center to bring in two more,
Croston started the UHS fourth with a solo home run and Smolkin added an RBI groundout.
Morgantown left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, unable to cash in an error and two walks.
A wild pitch and Templeton’s RBI double capped University’s scoring the top of the fifth.
Morgantown got a run in the bottom of the fifth when Riley Anderson scored on a double play, but that was all the Mohigans could put on the scoreboard.
