The Birthday Lunch will be on May 25. The seniors with birthdays in May are Carolyn Marks, Karen Martin, Don Happ and Ruth Henthorn. Happy Birthday wishes go out to them. We will be closed on May 29 in observance of Memorial Day. The Ripley Center will also be closed on May 31 because the seniors will be enjoying an outing that day.
The month of May is flying by. Mother’s Day has come and gone, and it will soon be Memorial Day, the unofficial first day of summer. When I was a child I tagged along with my parents, grandma and aunts to decorate graves. We’d go to the family cemetery up the holler where we lived. My parents and us kids also went to the one in St. Albans where my dad’s family were buried. Both graveyards are very old. As a child, I’d walk through the cemetery in St. Albans looking at all the tombstones. I’d try not to walk on the graves though. Mom always told us not to walk on them. Were you ever told that? Many of the graves there dated back to the early 1800s.
The cemetery up the holler didn’t have many grave markers with names and dates on them. The graves up there faced east. I was told it was so they could see the rising sun and meet Christ face-to-face during the resurrection. It is located up on top of a hill. We climbed up the path to decorate Grandpa’s grave and the graves of some of my grandparent’s children that had died young. Grandma made bouquets from fresh flowers cut from the bushes in her yard (snowball, lilac bush and rose bush). My great grandparents were also buried there. They had no marker on their graves. A few years ago, with the help of the memory of one of my aunts, we made an educated guess as to where they were buried and put metal markers where we think they are.
Charley and I still go each year and decorate the graves. I visit and reminisce.
I leave you with the following verses:
Isaiah 41:10 — Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Jeremiah 17:14 — Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.
James 5:14 — Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
Answer to riddle: Garden hose!
