RACHEL, W.Va. (WV News) — Running on their home track, the North Marion Huskies claimed the Class AA Region I girls title on Friday, scoring 154 points to easily defeat Weir (103) and Oak Glen (100).
Fairmont Senior (88), Grafton (70), East Fairmont (65), Frankfort (65), Keyser (36) and Berkeley Springs (15) completed team scoring.
East Fairmont’s Breeona Pheasant ran third in the 100 meter dash in 13.18 seconds, and teammate Taylor Nicholas was the top local in third in the 200 in 27.52 seconds.
Grafton’s Hadley Horne placed second in the 400 meter dash in 1:02.12, ahead of North Marion’s Trinity Hine (1:02.77).
The Bearcats’ Emily Viani (2:20.26) was a comfortable winner in the 800 meters, with teammate Horne (2:32.10) third.
North Marion’s Taylor Hess ran second in the 1600 meters in 5:43.66.
North Marion’s Rylee Delovich triumphed in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.32 seconds, beating Fairmont Senior’s Paytyn Neal (16.01). Delovich also won the 300 hurdles in 47.13, ahead of Horne (49.02) and the Huskies’ Lauren McGinty (49.83).
The Polar Bears were excellent in the relays.
Senior took the 4x100 meter relay in 51.15 seconds in a great race, beating Oak Glen (51.21), North Marion (51.65) and Weir (51.93). Senior was first in the 4x200 relay in 1:48.56, while North Marion (1:51.93) came in third. And Senior won the 4x800 relay in 10:23.26, ahead of Grafton (10:38.36) and North Marion (10:42.62).
North Marion was second (4:16.39) and Fairmont Senior third (4:18.13) in the 4x400.
The Huskies won the shuttles in 1:06.71, beating Fairmont Senior (1:07.49) and East Fairmont (1:10.44).
North Marion’s Gabrielle Conaway took the high jump, clearing 5-00, while East Fairmont’s Abreonna Parilak (4-08) was second.
The Huskies also got a win in the long jump courtesy of Cierra Parker (16-02), just in front of Fairmont Senior’s Neal (16-01).
Grafton’s Jerra Halbritter won the shot put with a throw of 33-09.50.
The pole vault belonged to North Marion’s Maylie Bland, whose finish of 9-06 was 18 inches better than second place; Grafton’s Jennah Charlton was third, clearing 7-06.
Keyser took the men’s title with 157.5 points, besting Weir (142), Frankfort (119.5), Fairmont Senior (93), East Fairmont (54), Berkeley Springs (44), Oak Glen (34), North Marion (29) and Grafton (24).
The Polar Bears’ Trey Longwell was second in the 100 meter dash in 11.36 seconds.
Fairmont Senior’s Grant Broadhurst claimed second in the 400 meter dash in 51.34 seconds.
North Marion got a second place finish courtesy of Jeffery Cowger in the 110 hurdles in 15.86 seconds.
Fairmont Senior ran third in the 4x100 meter relay in 45.64 seconds and third in the 4x400 in 3:35.76.
The Polar Bears were second in the shuttles in 1:01.87, ahead of third-place North Marion (1:03.65)
The Polar Bears’ Nate Flower was the high jump champion with a clearance of 5-10 and also was second in the 300 hurdles in 42.39 seconds.
Fairmont Senior’s Cannon Dinger was third in the long jump with a best of 19-07.75.
East Fairmont’s Dakota Danmeyer’s throw of 156-07 took the discus, while he placed second in the shot put with a throw of 50-03.25.
The top three finishers in each event in each region automatically qualify for next weekend’s state meet in Charleston and are joined by the four next-best times statewide, while some field competitors can also qualify by beating a state standard.
