BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WV News) — The Bridgeport Indians rebounded from a shaky playoff opener loss to Buckhannon-Upshur, playing error-free softball en route to a 12-0 win over the Preston Knights in a Class AAA Region I, Section 2 elimination game.
“We were mentally focused,” Bridgeport coach Chelsea Holcomb said. “We took the best infield we have all season, which, for us, is difficult at times. It’s just so hard for us to get focused and mentally lock in.”
Addison Veigel turned in an excellent performance as well in Holcomb’s eyes.
“I think AV goes unnoticed sometimes just because of the scoreboard and where the ball gets hit. She’s special. She’s a freshman coming in and playing shortstop for us and holding her own every game,” Holcomb said. “I couldn’t be more proud of her. She comes to work every single day and she needed a game like this for her confidence. For me, I know she’s solid.
“AV had a great game, but she doesn’t have a great game unless (first baseman) Sadie (Hamrick) is over there snatching them. That’s a freshman and a sophomore duo on our infield.”
Chloe Pethtel got the win with a shutout in the circle.
“When we start off okay, we’re fine,” Holcomb said. “That’s the name of the game.”
Aggressive baserunning and solid bunting also fueled the victory.
“Tonight, we did well. We were able to get a few hits that gave us insurance so we could start working on that small-ball game and getting two bases, which is what we have to do to beat better teams and make a longer run in the section,” Holcomb said. “It was so nice to see the bottom of the lineup come alive. Hopefully, we can have some consistency with that tomorrow.”
The Tribe will get a second shot at Buckhannon-Upshur on Tuesday, hosting the Buccaneers at 5 p.m.
The winner will have to go to University and win twice to take the second; the Hawks need only one victory to move on to regionals.
