Editors Note: The following is part of series of profiles on candidates running in Clarksburg’s June 6 municipal election.
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Tyler Hart is one of 10 candidates running for Clarksburg City Council. Voters will be asked to select three candidates.
— Biography: “I have lived in Clarksburg my entire life and run my own small business photography/videography company. I have watched time go by and the conditions of our home continue to suffer due to property hoarding, the inability to work together, broken and outdated systems, corporate greed, as well as a magnitude of observations that have shown me that something must change in order to preserve the future of not only our city, but the legacy of our home.”
— What do you see as the most important issue currently facing Clarksburg and what would you do to address it if you are elected?:
“There are many issues we face moving forward. However, the most pressing issues we face would be economic rehabilitation for all small businesses, as well as the lack of new and fresh opportunities for the youth population of our city. It is no secret that the drug epidemic, paired with the ever-looming homelessness problem, stay on the top of the agenda and have for years. If I had to name a third, I would suggest the lack of accountability and creativity coming from within the current administration when creating proper social systems that adhere with the direct problems of today.”
— What are your expectations for the newly hired city manager and what do you hope they will accomplish in their first year on the job?:
“It is about time that we have a city manager on the payroll! However, it is not the person in this position’s job now to bear the brunt of all of Clarksburg’s problems. Rather than having expectations for this individual, we should all be asking what our personal expectations are and can be that influence for positive change in our city. Within the first year of this hire, I would expect to see the proper organization of a daily operation public works department, streamlined building and zoning decisions regarding abandoned or condemned properties to avoid possible and evident rodent infestation through the hot summer months. It would also be nice to see the bathrooms in downtown unlocked on a schedule and the lights in the bathroom at Jackson Square to finally be replaced with anti-drug use ‘blue’ lights to prevent possible narcotic overdoses that are commonly seen as the only possibility if you give the public bathroom access.”
— What should the city be doing to promote economic development in the downtown business area — should the B&O tax credit program be expanded?:
“At this current time, I think all B&O Tax program adjustments should be put on a working rubric for the next calendar year. In 2024, the city should then come back to the table and adjust the program after one year of observation.”
— How should Clarksburg work to forge stronger ties with decision makers in Charleston?:
“It is no secret that our lawmakers in Charleston have their jobs cut out for them with our heavily dissected districts. I believe that even with electing Mickey Petitto of Clarksburg to the House, we deal with unfair bias in countywide decision making. Ways that we could better facilitate communications between small government at home to big government down 79 could be as simple as keeping up with regular check-ins on the important issues on a scheduled regular basis via Skype or Zoom. A cohesive plan of intention could also be mapped by a group effort of our officials down to a checklist and added to the ever so working processes that we are already working so hard on together.”
