Armed Robbery First Degree
BRUCETON MILLS — On May 15, Preston County Sheriff’s Department Deputies arrested a New Martinsville man on charges of first-degree armed robbery.
Deputies responded to a report of a stolen vehicle, and the victim stated she had been giving a ride to two unknown men, at which point a firearm was pointed at her head. One of the men was identified as Chandler Scott Martin, 21.
The woman was forced to the back seat, and the men took the vehicle. She managed to jump out of the vehicle, and the men fled.
Deputies found the vehicle crashed, and Martin was found walking away from the crashed vehicle.
Martin was arraigned and was held on $200,000 bail.
Possession of a controlled substance
REEDSVILLE — Preston County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a Reedsville resident for possession of a controlled substance on May 16.
The deputy wrote that a vehicle had a missing license plate light. Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver was identified as Karon Lewis, 37. Lewis had a suspended driver’s license, and there was an odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle.
When asked by the deputy if he had any marijuana in the vehicle, Lewis allegedly stated no. When asked if he had anything illegal on his person, Lewis produced a small plastic wrapper that contained a substance believed to be methamphetamine. Another plastic wrapper was hidden inside his hat that also contained a substance believed to be methamphetamine.
Lewis was arraigned and released on a $3,000 personal recognizance bond.
Possession of a controlled substance
TUNNELTON — A woman was arrested in Tunnelton on several charges, including possession of a controlled substance on May 13.
According to the criminal complaint, West Virginia State Police observed a vehicle without an inspection sticker. Upon pulling the vehicle over, the driver was identified as Nicky Lee Sidebottom, 37, of Tunnelton, who did not have a valid driver’s license.
Troopers were told there was a marijuana pipe and possibly some marijuana inside it. Troopers then found a substance consistent with marijuana.
Sidebottom was charged with possession of a controlled substance, no insurance, improper registration, and driving on a suspended license.
She was released on $1,000 personal recognizance bond.
Failure to register as a sex offender
TERRA ALTA — A man required to register as a sex offender for life was arrested on a criminal complaint dated March 16.
David Francis Moon, 67, had a registered address in Terra Alta, but was not the same address he was currently living at. Moon also had been found to have social media accounts.
Moon was held on $5,000 bail.
Domestic Assault
BRETZ — On May 8, West Virginia State Police responded to a domestic complaint in Bretz.
Troopers were informed that a woman, identified as Melanie Leah Shoemaker, 29, of Bretz, was screaming and swearing at another. The person had been gathering personal belongings when Shoemaker became verbally aggressive.
The person went to move their vehicle when Shoemaker “rammed” the truck, smashing the side of the door. Shoemaker then left in the truck and drove away.
Shoemaker was released on $3,000 cash or property bond.
Domestic Assault
ALBRIGHT — West Virginia State Police arrested an Albright man on a May 7 criminal complaint.
According to the criminal complaint, a woman was arguing with Matthew Anthony Hicks, 37, had used a metal “torch” to crack the windshield. He also damaged the passenger door by ripping out the plastic paneling. She also told the trooper, Hicks said he would kill her, she could not leave, and that he would not let her go.
Hicks was charged with domestic assault, destruction of property and injuring/tampering with a vehicle. He was released on $3,000 bond.
Trespassing on CSX rail property
TERRA ALTA — A Terra Alta man was arrested on May 14 on charges of trespassing on CSX property.
West Virginia State Police were told Getty A. Spahr, 60, was intoxicated and was on his red all-terrain vehicle. The trooper was told Spahr traveled down the railroad tracks and collided into railroad ties.
Troopers observed Spahr with a strong odor of alcohol on him, slurred speech, droopy eyelids and staggering. Spahr refused to do field sobriety tests as well as a preliminary breath test.
He was charged with driving under the influence, refusal of a preliminary breath test, and trespassing on CSX rail property. He was released on $1,500 personal recognizance bond.
Possession of a controlled substance
MASONTOWN — On May 14, a Masontown man was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence and refusing a preliminary breath test.
Both West Virginia State Police and Preston County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a call of a man appearing to be unconscious behind the wheel of a parked, running vehicle.
Upon making contact with the man, identified as Travis Matthew Knotts, 35, officers could detect a strong odor of alcohol coming from Knotts as well as slurred speech, staggering, unsteady while attempting to stand still, confused, drowsy and droopy eyelids.
The officers also detected the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Located inside the vehicle was a small jar of marijuana, a smoking device and a grinding device for the substance.
Knotts failed field sobriety tests but refused a preliminary breath test. He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance bond.
Driving on a suspended license
KINGWOOD — On March 23, Preston County Sheriff’s Department deputies observed a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign.
The driver, Jeremiah Jacob Wolfe, 26, of Terra Alta, told the deputy he had a suspended driver’s license.
Wolfe was released on $1,500 bond.
