FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WV News) — Marion County Schools announced earlier this month that Kathy Cyphers, executive secretary and account for the county’s special education department, won the 2023 Marion County Service Personnel of the Year award.
Cyphers began working for Marion County Schools in 2014, first as a substitute cook and secretary before being hired full time as the secretary at Rivesville Elementary and Middle School before doing the same at East Fairmont Middle School.
Not long after that, though, Cyphers made her way to the central board office, first in the personnel department before moving on to her current role in the special education department.
“I get the pleasure of working for the students, even if I’m not around the students,” Cyphers said. “I’m still around many teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapists. I get the best of both worlds.”
Cyphers said that when she was notified of her award, she couldn’t believe it.
“I was very shocked, because no central office employee has ever won this award, so it’s very special to me,” Cyphers said.
Cyphers was nominated for the award by Marion County Schools Administrative Assistant for Special Services Gia Deasy.
In her nomination, Deasy said Cyphers does more than her job requests of her, and has made the entire department stronger because of her work ethic and morale.
“Mrs. Cyphers’s skill set makes her the perfect secretary/accountant for all the tasks assigned,” Deasy said in her nomination. “However, there is much more to her character that makes her stand out as a service personnel of the year. Given the heavy load of responsibilities and tasks, Kathy always has the energy to help problem solve.”
Cyphers said she likes being dedicated to her work, always trying to go above and beyond to serve the teachers and students in the department.
“I try my best,” Cyphers said. “I try to do what’s right no matter what, and just work.”
