As a music teacher, I love to teach “The Star-Spangled Banner”! I usually take the month of September, it’s birthday month, and we study its history, the lyrics, and memorize the first verse. The 3rd and 4th graders that memorize it, get to sing at a basketball game at the high school. In the past, PCES has sung at the Opening Day of Baseball/Softball at Butchersville and we’re hoping to do it again this year.

I hate to go to events and hear recordings played, when I know we have the talent to sing/perform our National Anthem. This song is supposed to represent our country and honor all who have fought for the freedom we take for granite. So last year I decided to sing it myself at home softball games. I don’t expect others to do something that I’m not willing to do myself.

This year I have challenged some of my students at school as well as others in the community to perform the Star-Spangled Banner at the high school softball games. (I work in the press box and control the sound system. 😉)

I’m excited to say that yesterday, Trinity Lamb was the first to step forward and sing “The Star-Spangled Banner”. Today, Adisson invited five of her high school band colleagues, Wyatt Call, McKinley Davis, Kordail Harris, Sam Johnston, and Brady Smith to play the National Anthem. Thank you to each one for their willingness to stand up and sing/play for our country. I’m proud of you and hoping others will follow your great examples.

PCES 4th grader Bralyn Somerville sang ”The Star-Spangled Banner” at tonight’s Minutemaid softball game and I am so very proud of her!!! She never hesitated when I asked her and she owned it! Great job Bralyn!!!
