Rookie quarterbacks will get much of the attention this week when most NFL teams hit the field for non-contact practices. Twenty teams kicked off their voluntary organized team activities on Monday and 10 more will do so on Tuesday. Only the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles and the AFC runner-up Cincinnati Bengals aren’t holding workouts this week. Teams are allowed, per the collective bargaining agreement, to hold 10 days of practices without pads and no live contact over a four-week span. They can run 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

The Baltimore Ravens have signed quarterback Josh Johnson and waived linebacker Daelin Hayes. The 37-year-old Johnson returns to the Ravens after playing one game with them in 2021. He’s made nine starts in his NFL career — five with Tampa Bay, three with Washington and one with Baltimore. Hayes was drafted by the Ravens in the fifth round in 2021 and has dealt with knee problems, appearing in only one game since then.

Anthony, who was not in the NBA this season, retires as the No. 9 scorer in league history. Only LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki, Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O’Neal scored more than Anthony. He finishes his career with 28,289 points.

Cedric Mullins got five hits, Austin Hays drove in the decisive run in the 11th inning and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-3 to complete a three-game sweep. Toronto’s Matt Chapman hit a solo home run and had two RBIs but the struggling Blue Jays lost for the sixth time in their past seven.

Riley Adams had a career-high four hits and finished a triple short of the cycle as the Washington Nationals tied their season high with 18 hits in a 6-4 win over the Detroit Tigers 6-4. Adams homered, singled and doubled in his first three at-bats, then hit a bloop double in the seventh. Ildemaro Vargas hit his first home run since last Aug. 28 and Jeimer Candelario had four singles. Josiah Gray allowed one run and three hits over five inning but matched his career high with six walks.

The Baltimore Orioles activated right-hander Mychal Givens off the 15-day injured list before Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Left-hander Cole Irvin was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Givens had not pitched this season because of inflammation in his left knee. He went 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA in six relief appearances with Double-A Bowie and Norfolk. The eight-year veteran signed a one-year, $3 million contract with Baltimore last December, rejoining the team he pitched for between 2015 and 2020.

Marta had a goal and an assist and the Orlando Pride handed the Washington Spirit their first loss of the regular season in the National Women's Soccer League, 2-1. A ninth horse has died after being injured following a race at Churchill Downs, making it the ninth fatality since late April at the home of the Kentucky Derby. A 3-year-old filly named Swanson Lake was pulled up by jockey James Graham about 100 yards past the finish line after placing fourth. She was vanned off the track. Churchill Downs equine director Dr. Will Farmer says the filly sustained “a significant injury to the left hind leg.” Upon further examination, it was deemed inoperable and she was euthanized. A horse died after a race May 14 at Churchill Downs, and seven others have died since late April.

Ryan Mountcastle scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning when third baseman Matt Chapman’s throw hit him in the back on Austin Hays’ grounder, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 to become the second team to reach 30 wins. Ryan O’Hearn tied his career high with four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the eighth off Jordan Romano that tied the score 5-5. Cedric Mullins hit a solo homer as the Orioles won for the fourth time in five games. George Springer hit a two-run home run and Danny Jansen hit a solo homer.

Patrick Corbin won consecutive starts for the first time since last summer and Lane Thomas had a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning that led the Washington Nationals over the Detroit Tigers 5-2 and stopped a four-game losing streak. Corbin allowed two runs and six hits in six innings against the Tigers, the only big league team he had never faced. Coming off a win over the New York Mets, Corbin won consecutive starts for the first time since beating Cincinnati on Aug. 28 and the Mets on Sept. 3.

A horse trained by Bob Baffert has been euthanized on the track after going down with injury and unseating his jockey during a race on the Preakness undercard. Havnameltdown buckled forward and threw jockey Luis Saez off his back during the sixth race and continued running around the final turn in some distress. The horse was euthanized on the track after being looked at by veterinary staff. Saez was taken to a hospital complaining about leg pain but was conscious. He was attended to by medical personnel on the track for several minutes before being put on a stretcher and into an ambulance.

Preakness favorite Mage is good to go for the second race of the Triple Crown after bumping his head in his stall. The Kentucky Derby winner got a few stitches to close the cut above his right eye. Co-owner and blood stock agent Ramiro Restrepo confirmed Mage was treated by a state veterinarian and resumed training without interruption. Vets examined and cleared Mage and the six other Preakness horses to run in the $1.65 million race later Saturday. Mage was the 2-1 favorite seven hours before post time.

Akil Baddoo hit one of Detroit’s four homers and drove in four runs, Matthew Boyd pitched effectively into the sixth inning, and the Tigers held on to beat the Washington Nationals 8-6. Zack McKinstry’s solo shot and Baddoo’s three-run homer helped the Tigers to a 6-0 lead after three innings against rookie Jake Irvin. Detroit has won 10 of its last 15. Washington rallied for six runs late, thanks to a pair of two-run shots from Lane Thomas and Keibert Ruiz. The Nationals have lost four in a row and five of six. Matt Vierling and Riley Greene also went deep for Detroit.

Ryan Mountcastle hit a three-run home run, Anthony Santander and Adam Frazier also connected and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2. Elena Delle Donne added 13 points and Kristi Toliver scored 10 in her return to Washington after spending two seasons in Los Angeles. New York, which was labeled a super team during the offseason, shot just 34% from the field and turned it over 20 times. Cloud blocked Sabrina Ionescu’s shot at the halftime buzzer to keep Washington’s lead at 39-26. The Liberty started the game making just 5 of 23 shots and finished the half shooting 27%.

Taxed raced to an upset victory in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, closing strong for convincing win over Hoosier Philly and unbeaten favorite Faiza. Taxed was claimed by owner Richard Bahde last year for $50,000. The filly won this $300,000 race at Pimlico by 3 3/4 lengths over Hoosier Philly. Faiza settled for third for trainer Bob Baffert, who makes his return to Triple Crown racing at Saturday’s Preakness after missing time while suspended. Faiza was a 3-5 favorite after winning her first five races, all in California.

Bob Baffert is back at the Preakness for his first Triple Crown race in two years. National Treasure is his first horse set to run in the series since Medina Spirit at the 2021 Preakness. Baffert was barred from the Kentucky Derby in 2022 and 2023 since winner Medina Spirit was disqualified for failing a postrace drug test. He could not enter a horse in the Preakness or Belmont last year because of a suspension in Kentucky that Maryland and New York honored. Baffert is going for a record-breaking eighth victory in the Preakness.

A top contender has been scratched from the Preakness 36 hours before the Triple Crown race. Brad Cox-trained First Mission was pulled from the Preakness on the advice of veterinarians. That leaves the field at seven. First Mission was the second betting choice at 5-2 behind Kentucky Derby winner and favorite Mage. Five horses were scratched in the days and hours leading up to the Derby. That included favorite Forte after state racing officials expressed concern about a bruised right front foot.

Shohei Ohtani homered in the first inning and hit a tiebreaking infield single in the eighth to help the Los Angeles Angels hold on for a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Hunter Renfroe preserved the win with a terrific defensive play in the ninth. Mike Trout also went deep for the Angels, and Anthony Santander and Adley Rutschman homered for Baltimore. Rutschman’s two-run shot in the seventh gave Baltimore a 5-4 lead, but it was short lived. Los Angeles scored two in the eighth and held on for the win.

Preakness Stakes favorite Mage is the first Kentucky Derby champion with Venezuelan ties since Canonero II in 1971. Nearly 400 different people can also call themselves a co-owner. Mage has brought them all together. Now he'll try to make all of them happy by doing what Canonero did in taking the first two legs of the Triple Crown. A win at the Preakness on Saturday would do even more to put Venezuelan horse racing on the map.

When Secretariat won the Preakness a half-century ago, his final time of 1 minute, 55 seconds wasn’t all that noteworthy. It was a second slower than the Preakness mark set two years earlier by Canonero II. But the dispute over that time was only beginning. It wasn't until 2012 when owner Penny Chenery finally succeeded in securing her horse’s record. After a hearing and a review of video footage, the Maryland Racing Commission changed the official time of the race to 1:53. Secretariat still holds all three Triple Crown time records from his magical year in 1973.

Industry leaders believe horse racing is at at crossroads after seven horses died at Churchill Downs in the leadup to the Kentucky Derby. Those deaths happening at the start of Triple Crown season when the most attention is on horse racing led to public outcry. Many inside the sport also have questions about what caused the cluster of fatalities at the same track over a 10-day span. They're being raised during Preakness week with a Triple Crown still possible and on the horizon of new national medication and anti-doping rules going into effect next week.

Right-hander Aníbal Sánchez is retiring after 16 years in the majors. Sánchez was an 11-game winner for the Washington Nationals when they won the 2019 World Series. The 39-year-old Venezuelan posted a retirement message on Instagram Tuesday. He wasn't signed the first six weeks of the season. He missed 2021 because of a cervical nerve impingement. Sánchez spent seven years with Miami before a six-year run with Detroit. He was 116-119 in 364 appearances with 341 starts.

Ryan Mountcastle homered and doubled after entering the game as a pinch-hitter, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-3. Dean Kremer rebounded after allowing a homer to lead off the game, winning his third straight start, and Ryan O’Hearn also homered for Baltimore. O’Hearn started as the Orioles’ designated hitter in the No. 9 spot in the batting order, but after his solo shot in the second tied the game at 1, Mountcastle pinch-hit for him after the Angels lifted right-hander Chase Silseth in the fourth and replaced him with lefty Tucker Davidson. Mountcastle greeted Davidson with a double, then two innings later hit a two-run homer.

Mage's team at the Preakness has settled into a stable routine at the Preakness after the horse's Kentucky Derby victory capped off a tumultuous stretch at Churchill Downs. The race itself went off without incident but came on the heels of seven horse deaths in a span of 10 days. An eighth horse died racing at the Louisville track Sunday. Mage was driven 11 hours to Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore over the weekend. The colt's preparations may as well be happening a world away with co-owner Ramiro Restrepo and trainer Gustavo Delgado overseeing calm low-key jogging each morning.

Joey Meneses drove in four runs as part of a four-hit day, CJ Abrams homered and the Washington Nationals defeated the New York Mets 10-3 to earn a split of a four-game series. New York has lost nine of its last 13 and dropped 15 of 21 since its 14-7 start. The Mets are 0-5-2 in their last seven series and have not won consecutive games since taking three in a row from April 19-21. Washington starter Patrick Corbin earned his first home victory since last Aug. 28, surrendering two runs and eight hits over six innings. The Nationals improved to 17-17 since losing five of their first six games.

The Los Angeles Angels have put infielder Anthony Rendon on the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain. The move is retroactive to Sunday. The Angels also recalled infielder Livan Soto from Double-A Rocket City, reinstated catcher Chad Wallach from the IL and optioned catcher Chris Okey to Triple-A Salt Lake. The 32-year-old Rendon has hit .301 in 30 games this year. He’s in the fourth season of a $245 million, seven-year deal with Los Angeles. He hasn’t played more than 58 games in a season since leaving Washington to join the Angels.

Fanatics Betting and Gaming is buying the U.S. operations of Australian sportsbook PointsBet for $150 million in a move that will help the sports apparel and memorabilia giant gain market share in the American sports betting and online casino markets. The companies said Sunday night that PointsBet shareholders will vote on the sale in late June. It still faces numerous regulatory approvals. The sale comes as Fanatics is launching sports betting and online casino operations, hoping to draw on its database of 95 million customers, who have bought everything from jerseys to trading cards to autographed memorabilia from the online retailer.

The AL East could be headed to a historic season. All five AL East teams are above .500. The Boston Red Sox are in last place, and they are a solid 22-19. That's about an 87-win pace for a whole season. Right now the AL East includes baseball’s top team in Tampa Bay. It also has the top four teams in the American League wild-card race. Baltimore, Toronto and the New York Yankees would all be in the playoffs if the postseason began now. The five teams in the division have a combined winning percentage of .615.

Mitch Keller struck out a career-high 13 in seven innings and the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates won for only the second time in 13 games, 4-0 over the Baltimore Orioles. The Pirates avoided a sweep after dropping the first two games of the series. Pittsburgh was 20-8 after a 16-1 win at Washington on April 29. Then the Pirates scored just 18 runs in their next 12 games. They managed four Sunday without a single extra-base hit, and that was plenty the way Keller was pitching. Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, who has played in every game this season, pinch-hit in the ninth and popped out to end the game.

Center fielder Alex Call made a pair of outstanding defensive plays in the ninth inning, preserving the Washington Nationals’ 3-2 win and dealing the slumping New York Mets their 14th loss in 20 games. In the completion of a game suspended in the third inning after a 3-hour, 56-minute rain delay on Saturday night, CJ Abrams broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh with a home run off Dominic Leone, who lost in his first decision with the Mets. Call perfectly played the carom off the wall on Michael Pérez’s two-out drive in the ninth off Kyle Finnegan.

Ashley Hatch converted a penalty kick in stoppage time to give the Washington Spirit a 1-0 victory over Angel City in the National Women’s Soccer League. The Spirit are the lone undefeated team in the league, with four wins and three draws — the longest unbeaten streak to start a season in team history. Washington won three games all of last season. Angel City’s Mary Alice Vignola had a handball in the box that was confirmed by a lengthy video review. Hatch buried the penalty for her league-leading fifth goal.

The game between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals was suspended with the Nationals leading 1-0 in the third inning after after a rain delay of 3 hours, 56 minutes. A light rain was falling when the game began at 4:05 p.m. EDT and soon intensified but play continued. The Mets had runners on second and third after a one-out double by Michael Perez when the game was halted. After the rain stopped, the tarp came off the field at around 7 p.m. After both managers inspected the infield, the grounds crew continued to work on it. The game was eventually suspended at 8:39 p.m.

Francisco Lindor hit a three-run single in the sixth inning to lift the struggling New York Mets over the last-place Washington Nationals 3-2 in the opener of a four-game series. New York had lost four of five and 13 of 17 to fall to fourth place in the NL East before rallying against the Nationals’ bullpen. The Mets were shut out in 19 consecutive innings, and the streak was on the verge of continuing when Carl Edwards Jr. entered with runners on second and third and two out in the sixth. Brandon Nimmo walked, setting up Lindor’s single to right-center that cleared the bases. With all three runners going on a full-count pitch, Nimmo scored all the way from first.

Cedric Mullins hit for the cycle for Baltimore, and his three-run homer in the eighth inning helped the Orioles to a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mullins hit a single in the third, a triple in the fifth and a double in the seventh before completing the cycle with a drive to right in his final plate appearance. He became the seventh Oriole to accomplish the feat and first since Austin Hays on June 22, 2022 against Washington. The Pirates have lost 10 of 11 since starting the season 20-8.

Cedric Mullins has hit for the cycle for the Baltimore Orioles against Pittsburgh. Mullins hit a single in the third inning, a triple in the fifth, a double in the seventh and a three-run homer in the eighth. He became the seventh Oriole to accomplish the feat and first since Austin Hays on June 22, 2022 against Washington. After completing the cycle with his home run, Mullins received a standing ovation when he took the field defensively for the top of the ninth.

New York Mets right-hander Max Scherzer is expected to start Sunday or Monday against the Washington Nationals after throwing a bullpen session Friday. Scherzer, who was scratched from his start Tuesday against Cincinnati because of neck spasms, threw about 30 pitches before the opener of a four-game series. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has pitched only once since a 10-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s prohibition on sticky substances during an April 19 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Horse racing has a Kentucky Derby winner headed to the Preakness with a chance at the Triple Crown. But that pales in comparison to the questions facing the sport after what National Thoroughbred Racing Association president Tom Rooney called a “challenging” stretch. Seven horses died over a span of 10 days at Churchill Downs leading up to and on Derby day. Trainers confident in their horses racing May 20 at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore would like some answers about what happened in Kentucky.

Kentucky Derby winner Mage will run in the 148th Preakness following an encouraging workout at Churchill Downs, the horse’s connections said. Mage galloped about 1 1/2 miles at a brisk pace with exercise rider J.J. Delgado aboard Friday morning at the track. Co-owner and bloodstock agent Ramiro Restrepo said the chestnut colt was “thriving” with good energy levels after his latest training session since winning the 149th Derby, paving the way for the horse to enter the Triple Crown’s second jewel at Pimlico in Baltimore. Mage will run in the 1 3/16th mile Preakness just two weeks after covering 1 1/4 mile in the Derby in 2:01.57.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has been suspended 10 days and fined. It is the result of a positive drug test last year involving Forte, who was scratched on Kentucky Derby day last weekend because of an injury. Forte was disqualified from his victory in the Hopeful Stakes on Sept. 5, 2022, at Saratoga in upstate New York for testing positive for meloxicam, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory. According to a ruling posted on the New York State Gaming Commission website, Pletcher plans to appeal and a stay of his suspension has been granted. He also was fined $1,000.

Dean Kremer pitched six scoreless innings and the Baltimore Orioles edged the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1. The Orioles took two of three in a series between the top two teams in the American League. They trail Tampa Bay by 4 1/2 games in the AL East. Kremer allowed four hits and the Orioles broke through for two runs in the sixth. Wander Franco’s RBI single in the eighth cut the lead in half before Yennier Cano pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

Todd Monken can rest a little easier now. At this point it looks as if his decision to become Baltimore's offensive coordinator will have every chance to pay off. Not only did the Ravens finally reach a five-year deal with star quarterback Lamar Jackson, but they also added a couple of potential difference-makers at wide receiver. Baltimore signed Odell Beckham Jr. last month and drafted Zay Flowers in the first round. Now it’s up to the new coordinator to make the whole operation work.

The Tampa Bay Rays have signed left-handed reliever Jake Diekman to a major league contract and designated right-hander Chase Anderson for assignment. Diekman went 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA in 13 games with the Chicago White Sox this season before being designated for assignment on May 2 and released four days later. The thirty-six year old has a 25-30 record with 15 saves and a 3.96 ERA in 612 appearances during a 12-year career. The Rays acquired Anderson from the Cincinnati Reds on May 3 in a minor league deal for cash and he got his first big league save that night.

Casey Schmitt homered in his major league debut and the San Francisco Giants beat the Washington Nationals 4-1 on Tuesday night. Schmitt was selected from Triple-A Sacramento earlier Tuesday and went 2 for 4 with dozens of friends and family members in attendance. Mitch Haniger drove in two runs and Logan Webb limited the Nationals to one run in seven innings. Webb struck out seven and allowed nine hits and a walk, pitching out of several jams. Washington left 10 men on base and went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. Camilo Doval pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his eighth save in nine chances.

Adley Rutschman homered, Grayson Rodriguez pitched into the sixth inning and Baltimore’s bullpen was solid again to help the Orioles top the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2. The Orioles snapped a three-game losing streak, their longest mini-slump of the season, and pulled back within 5 1/2 games of the major league-leading Rays. Tampa Bay won the opener Monday in this three-game series between the top two teams in the American League. Wander Franco and Taylor Walls homered for the Rays, who lost for only the third time in 22 multi-homer games this season.

Georgia’s national championship football team is declining an invitation to visit the White House. According to a statement released by the Georgia athletic association, the Bulldogs will not be able to attend a June 12 event with other college teams at the White House described by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden as “College Athlete Day.” Georgia says it received the invitation on Wednesday. It said the date “is not feasible given the student-athlete calendar and time of year.” The statement said Georgia was appreciative of the invitation and looks forward to other opportunities to visit the White House.

Shane McClanahan pitched six impressive innings to become this season’s first seven-game winner, and Josh Lowe and Luke Raley homered to lift the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. In a matchup between the teams with the two best records in the American League, the Rays extended their AL East lead to 6 1/2 games. McClanahan allowed four hits and four walks and struck out seven. Kyle Gibson pitched well in defeat, allowing two runs in six-plus innings. The Orioles have lost three straight for the first time this season.

Kentucky racing officials have placed scratched Kentucky Derby favorite Forte on a mandatory 14-day veterinary list that may require the colt to pass a soundness test in Maryland in order to race in the Preakness. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced the update on Monday, two days after its veterinarians scratched the early 3-1 Derby choice during a morning soundness check because of concerns about a bruised right foot. A KHRC release cited HISA Rule 2241a in placing Forte on the list and stated that the Todd Pletcher-trained colt must perform a “satisfactory workout” and have a negative blood sample to be removed.

The Tampa Bay Rays have put left-handed reliever Garrett Cleavinger on the 15-day injured list with what manager Kevin Cash says appears to be a right ACL injury. Cleavinger could miss the rest of the season after hurting his knee during a rundown in Sunday’s victory over the New York Yankees. Cleavinger is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 15 appearances for the Rays. They have baseball’s best record. Tampa Bay recalled right-hander Trevor Kelley from Triple-A Durham.

Horse racing's Triple Crown moves on to the Preakness with horse deaths at Churchill Downs casting a big shadow. Seven horses have died at the track since April 27, including Derby entrant Wild On Ice. Freezing Point and Chloe’s Dream were euthanized after injuries before Saturday’s Kentucky Derby that was ultimately won by Mage. Five sustained catastrophic leg injuries, while two succumbed from causes yet to be determined. The question for now is how the stunning occurrence of fatal injuries at the cathedral of horse racing affects the sport with the Preakness and Belmont Stakes following over the next month. And, how horse racing responds.

Michael Harris hit a game-ending single off Cionel Pérez in the 12th inning, and the Atlanta Braves beat Baltimore 3-2 to stop the Orioles’ streak of eight consecutive winning series. Harris fly off Pérez (1-1) scored Ozzie Albies as the Braves won two of three from Baltimore, which lost consecutive games for the first time since April 8-9. Atlanta at 24-11 matched its best 35-game start, in 1969, 1997 and 1998.-

Kevin Pillar hit a pinch-hit two-run home run in the eighth inning to rally the Atlanta Braves to a 5-4 win over the red-hot Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night. Pillar’s shot came off Danny Coulombe (1-1) and scored Austin Riley, who opened the eighth with a single. A.J. Minter (1-3) pitched a perfect eighth and closer Raisel Iglesias got the save in his first appearance of the season

Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano finally won the Kentucky Derby aboard Mage. It took navigating traffic through the final turn before he broke clear and chased down Two Phil's to win by a length. The Venezuelan rider entered the Hall of Fame in 2017 after guiding Cloud Computing to a Preakness win but lacked a win in horse racing's premier event. Mage paid $32.42 at 15-1 odds and gave Castellano a signature win.

Seven horses died at Churchill Downs in the days and hours leading into the Derby. Still, the track was packed with Derby-goers in fancy dresses and seersucker suits posing for selfies, fluffing the feathers in their hats, sipping mint juleps. It was a jarring contrast to reports of horse being loaded into equine ambulances in the stable area, just on the opposite side of the racetrack. Some in attendance hadn't even heard the news. Others said they tried not to let it dampen the party. All one person could think to do was pray as the horses were loaded into the starting gates that they'd make around the track and safely back to their barns.

The early favorite for the Kentucky Derby has been scratched hours before the race. Forte was declared out of the 149th Derby on Saturday, the fifth scratch from the race this week. No immediate reason was announced. Forte stumbled on the track during his workout Thursday, although trainer Todd Pletcher had downplayed it. Five horses have died at Churchill Downs in recent days, including two trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. He was suspended by the track and had his Derby horse, Lord Miles, scratched. Forte has a five-race winning streak and was the early 3-1 favorite.

Merrill Kelly struck out 10 in seven strong innings, Corbin Carroll homered in his return to the lineup and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Washington Nationals 3-1. Kelly gave up a solo homer to Luis García in the first, but also had three strikeouts in the inning. He allowed a run on four hits and walked one in his second straight solid start. Carroll homered off Josiah Gray in his first start since crashing into the wall against Colorado last Sunday. Andrew Chafin worked a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save in six chances to complete the combined four-hitter.

Anthony Santander homered from both sides of the plate, including his first career grand slam, and the Baltimore Orioles won for the 14th time in 17 games, 9-4 over the Atlanta Braves. Dean Kremer worked six strong innings for the Orioles, who became the first team this season to go deep against Braves ace Max Fried. Santander and Cedric Mullins both hit solo homers off Fried. Then, batting lefty in the seventh against Joe Jimenez, Santander cleared the bases with a drive that turned what had been a tight game into a rout.

Pretty Mischievous took charge in the stretch and held off a late push by Gambling Girl to win the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks by a neck at Churchill Downs. The Brendan Walsh-trained filly started from the No. 14 post at 10-1 odds in the premier race for 3-year-old fillies. Pretty Mischievous stayed within reach of pacesetters Flying Connection and Defining Purpose through the far turn before making her move through the final turn. Pretty Mischievous covered 1 1/8 mile in 1:49.77 with Tyler Gaffalione aboard and paid $22.74, $10.10 and $7.40. The Alys Look was third.

The cast of characters for the 149th Kentucky Derby was rewritten in the days leading up to Saturday's race. What didn't change is Forte is the early 3-1 favorite in a seemingly wide-open field of 19 horses. Four horses were scratched and three moved into the field. A crowd of about 150,000 is expected to jam Churchill Downs to wager and watch the 1 1/4-mile Derby. Todd Pletcher trains Forte, and two other horses. Brad Cox has a leading four entries, including early 8-1 third choice Angel of Empire. Saturday’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high of 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

AP Sports Columnist Paul Newberry says the stench of death hangs over this year's Kentucky Derby and its magnificent athletes. Four horses perished in the past week at Churchill Downs. That raises troubling questions about the sport of kings ahead of the 149th run for the roses. Newberry asks: If this can happen at the world’s most famous track, how safe can the sport be? And what is the interest in making changes to protect the horses?

Matt Harvey announced Friday he’s retiring from baseball after a nine-year pitching career highlighted by his time as the Mets’ “Dark Knight.” Harvey, whose star faded amid injuries and a late-career suspension for drug distribution, thanked fans for making “a dream come true” in his Instagram post announcing his retirement. Nicknamed the “Dark Knight of Gotham,” Harvey was selected seventh overall by the Mets in the 2010 amateur draft and made a heralded major league debut in 2012. He started the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field, but a little more than a month later tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and needed Tommy John surgery.

A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press the Washington Commanders are releasing center Chase Roullier with a post-June 1 designation. The move made that way for salary cap reasons allows the team to save more than $8 million next season. Roullier's career has been derailed by injuries since signing a lucrative contract extension in January 2021. He has only played 10 games since. The Commanders signed Nick Gates as his immediate replacement and drafted Ricky Stromberg in the third round as their long-term solution in the middle of the offensive line.

Rich Strike's stunning upset victory in last year's Kentucky Derby as a nearly 81-1 long shot provided the race's second big odds winner in four years. Country House came through in 2019 as a 59-1 choice, though he was elevated to winner after Maximum Security was disqualified for interference. They overcame long odds nonetheless, a warning not to look past that large number of entrants who have big odds ranging from 30-1 to 50-1.

Skinner has become the latest horse to be scratched from the Kentucky Derby. Trainer John Shirreffs says the California-based colt has an elevated temperature. With the defection of Skinner, the field for the 149th Derby on Saturday is down to 19 horses. No more can be added to the race since the scratch deadline has passed. Practical Move, Lord Miles and Continuar from Japan were scratched on Thursday. That moved Cyclone Mischief, Mandarin Hope from Japan and King Russell into the race. The last time four horses were scratched was in 2015.

Pinch-hitter Ramon Urias hit a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning, then added a two-run double in the ninth, helping the Baltimore Orioles overcome a blown seven-run lead in a 13-10 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Gunnar Henderson and Anthony Santander hit homers and Cedric Mullins also drove in three for the Orioles, who led 8-1 when their bullpen began to struggle. Kansas City went ahead on Bobby Witt Jr.'s single in the seventh, but then reliever Aroldis Chapman walked two batters and gave up Urias's single in the eighth. Yennier Cano earned the win in relief for Baltimore.

Investigators have yet to find any cause in the deaths of four horses over the past week at Churchill Downs, including two from the same barn within 72 hours. The deaths have cast a pall over final preparations for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. was been questioned by Kentucky racing investigators and he says they found no wrongdoing on his part in the deaths of two of his horses. He has scratched six other horses from upcoming races. Joseph still plans to saddle Lord Miles in the Derby although he acknowledges it's “going to be nerve-wracking.”

Lamar Jackson fielded questions for the first time since reaching a five-year, $260 million deal with Baltimore. Jackson said he was tired of going back and forth about the contract. The time had come to get it done. The Ravens held a news conference with Jackson, coach John Harbaugh and general manager Eric DeCosta. It was an understandably upbeat occasion after several days of excitement and relief in Baltimore. Jackson didn’t offer any major details about what suddenly clicked between him and the team, but there’s now plenty of optimism as the Ravens look forward to a future with one of the game’s most dynamic players.

Brad Cox views his full plate this weekend at Churchill Downs as a good problem to have. Especially if his contingent of fillies hit the board in Friday’s 149th Kentucky Oaks, a race where the Louisville-born trainer has thrived. Red-hot Wet Paint enters as the 5-2 morning line favorite, with Botanical the 4-1 second choice among 14 horses. Stablemate The Alys Look has 15-1 odds. Wet Paint and Botanical are both 3-0 this year. Norm Casse-trained Southlawn is the 8-1 third choice.

The Washington Commanders say they are supporting efforts by the District of Columbia to get control of the RFK Stadium site that used to be the home of the NFL team. A team spokesperson said officials are communicating with stakeholders at the federal and local levels about the RFK site. The land is currently controlled by the federal government. That is one of the biggest obstacles to potentially building a new state-of-the-art football stadium at the site. It's not clear how new ownership might approach the situation once Josh Harris' group buys the team from longtime owner Dan Snyder.

Alex Call hit a game-ending homer leading off the ninth inning, and the Washington Nationals recovered after blowing a 3-0 lead to beat Chicago 4-3 and take three of four from the skidding Cubs. Call lofted the only pitch from Brad Boxberger just inside the left-field foul pole and was greeted at the plate by exuberant teammates, who dumped a bucket of blue Gatorade on his head. Washington led 3-0 after seven near-flawless innings by starter Patrick Corbin, but the Cubs tied it in the eighth against reliever Hunter Harvey. Kyle Finnegan pitched out of a jam in the ninth for the win.

The starting gate in the Kentucky Derby will be full with 20 horses running 1 1/4 miles, many for the first time. The distance and the traffic-choked conditions typically eliminate half the field in the opening quarter-mile. Among those to watch are Forte, the early 3-1 favorite, and Tapit Trice, the second choice at 5-1. Both are trained by Todd Pletcher. Also keep an eye on Japan's Derma Sotogake, 3-1 third choice Angel of Empire and 20-1 shot Confidence Game in the race to wear the garland of red roses.

Practical Move won’t run in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday because of an elevated temperature. The scratch was announced by Churchill Downs. The colt trained by Tim Yakteen was the early co-fourth choice at 10-1 odds. That moves Cyclone Mischief into the 20-horse field. He finished third in the Florida Derby and second in the Fountain of Youth. He has two wins in seven career starts for trainer Dale Romans. Practical Move galloped on Thursday and Yakteen said in the morning that everything went well. The colt won the Santa Anita Derby last month.

Vinnie Pasquantino homered and drove in three runs, Zack Greinke won for the first time since last August and the Kansas City Royals snapped a 10-game home losing streak by beating the Baltimore Orioles 6-0. Greinke won for the first time in 14 starts. He allowed just three singles in five innings and striking out three. He threw only 44 pitches —- his fewest in a start since tossing 43 for Arizona at Boston on Aug. 14, 2016. The Royals won their second home game of the season to improve to 2-13 at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals knocked Kyle Gibson out of the game with four runs in the seventh.
