Rookie Hunter Gaddis pitched six strong innings for his first major league win and struggling Cleveland catcher Mike Zunino connected for a two-run homer, sending the Guardians over the Chicago White Sox 3-0. Gaddis was recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Columbus and gave the Guardians a badly needed quality start after they were swept over the weekend in New York, losing all three to the Mets by one run. Zunino, who has been a target of fan complaints because he’s not been hitting, belted his third homer in the seventh off reliever Gregory Santos. The White Sox had their three-game winning streak stopped.

Starling Marte ended a long power drought at the perfect time, hitting a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning that sent the resurgent New York Mets past the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 in the opener of a split doubleheader. Max Scherzer pitched six shutout innings and Brandon Nimmo also homered for the Mets, who won their fourth straight one-run game since a 6-16 slide. Marte’s first three-hit game of the season included a two-run shot to right field off Trevor Stephan for his first extra-base hit since April 14 in Oakland. His only other long ball this year came in the home opener April 7 against Miami. The two-time All-Star also cut down a runner at second base with a rocket throw from right field.

Harrison Bader and Gleyber Torres homered to spark a comeback, leading the New York Yankees over the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 for a three-game sweep and their first four-game winning streak this season. Luis Severino returned from a strained lat muscle that had sidelined him since spring training and allowed one run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings. Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected in the first and Reds manager David Bell in the eighth. New York completed a 6-1 trip. The Yankees have won six of seven and 14 of 19, improving to a season-high nine games over .500.

Three of the four cars from Rahal Letterman Lanigan were joined by Sting Ray Robb of Dale Coyne Racing in a final shootout for the last three spots in the Indianapolis 500. It's been a challenging week for Bobby Rahal's team, which could only get Katherine Legge into the field on the first day of the two-day qualifying. Rahal knows what it's like to miss the race, having done so in 1993, when he was the defending series champion. One of his three drivers fighting for a spot in next weekend's race is his son, Graham Rahal. The others are Christian Lundgaard and Jack Harvey.

Aaron Judge had a go-ahead single in the 10th inning for his fourth hit of the game, and the New York Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-4 after cutting Aaron Hicks with $27.6 million on the outfielder’s contract. New York overcame a 4-1 deficit in a three-run fifth inning against Luke Weaver on Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s homer, Judge’s RBI double off the left-field wall and Anthony Rizzo’s run-scoring single. Judge is hitting .378 with seven homers, 18 RBIs and a 1.402 OPS in 11 games since returning from the injured list on May 9.

The New York Yankees cut struggling outfielder Aaron Hicks before their game against the Cincinnati Reds. Hicks was designated for assignment to make room for outfielder Greg Allen, who was acquired in a trade with Boston on Friday. The 33-year-old Hicks is batting .188 with a homer and five RBIs in 28 games this season. He agreed to a $70 million, seven-year contract with New York in February 2019.

The scheduled game between the Cleveland Guardians and New York Mets has been postponed because of rain. It will be made up as part of a split-admission doubleheader Sunday at Citi Field, with the opener beginning at 1:40 p.m. and the nightcap at 7:10 p.m. With steady rain falling in New York and a wet forecast all day, the game was postponed just more than five hours before the scheduled first pitch. Max Scherzer had been slated to start for the Mets against rookie Tanner Bibee. Justin Verlander was lined up to pitch the series finale Sunday night against Cleveland ace Shane Bieber in a marquee matchup of Cy Young Award winners. New York rallied twice to win the opener 10-9 in 10 innings Friday night.

Pete Alonso tied the game with a grand slam in the seventh inning and Francisco Lindor hit an RBI single in the 10th as the New York Mets rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat the Cleveland Guardians 10-9. Gabriel Arias hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th against Drew Smith. In the bottom half, Mark Vientos and Francisco Álvarez tied the game with RBI singles against Emmanuel Clase. Lindor later singled to score Brandon Nimmo. The Mets have won three straight. Alonso's grand slam made it 7-7. Josh Naylor had five RBIs for the Guardians and hit a three-run first-inning homer.

Aaron Judge hit his seventh home run in as many games and the New York Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-2 .Anthony Rizzo also homered for the surging Yankees who improved to 9-3 in their last 12 games. Judge has homered in five of the last seven games including hitting two in two games during that stretch. Reds manager David Bell was ejected while disputing the umpires’ decision to allow Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt to continue his scoreless outing after checking him for foreign substances.

Cam Gallagher hit an RBI single during Cleveland’s two-run seventh inning, and the Guardians beat Dylan Cease and the Chicago White Sox 3-1. Gabriel Arias homered as Cleveland salvaged the finale of the three-game series. Nick Sandlin (2-1) got four outs for the win, and Emmanuel Clase worked the ninth for his 15th save. The Guardians went ahead to stay in the seventh. With one out and runners on second and third, Brayan Rocchio hit a grounder that shortstop Tim Anderson flubbed for an error. Rocchio was credited with his first major league RBI when Will Brennan scampered home to make it 2-1.

Jake Burger and Gavin Sheets both homered for the second straight game, leading the Chicago White Sox past the Cleveland Guardians 7-2. Chicago has posted consecutive victories against Cleveland and won for the third time in four games. Andrew Vaughn also went deep for the White Sox. Mike Clevinger tossed six-plus effective innings to beat Cleveland, his original team, for the first time. He allowed two runs and six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Rookie Peyton Battenfield allowed all three of Chicago’s homers in his sixth career start and seventh appearance.

An own-goal by Joel Waterman in the second minute of play provided the spark, leading FC Cincinnati to a 3-0 victory over CF Montreal. Luciano Acosta stretched the lead to 2-0 with his third goal of the season — unassisted in the 26th minute. Brandon Vazquez added his third goal of the season — with an assist from Obinna Nwobodo — to give Cincinnati a three-goal lead in the 65th minute. The victory moves Cincinnati (8-1-3) three points ahead of the idle New England Revolution atop the Eastern Conference standings.

Elias Díaz drove in three runs and Kris Bryant, Jurickson Profar and Brenton Doyle each had two RBIs in a two-inning, 11-run burst that helped the Colorado Rockies erase a five-run deficit and beat the Cincinnati Reds 11-6.  The Rockies sent 19 batters to the plate and recorded 10 hits while scoring five times in the fifth and six more in the sixth. Doyle’s two-run triple put Colorado ahead to stay in its 11th win in 16 games. Reds starter Graham Ashcraft was charged with seven runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings. Backup catcher Luke Maile homered and drove in two runs as the Reds built an early lead before collapsing as they finished a 2-4 trip.

Jason Day's golf game is back on an upswing entering the PGA Championship fresh off winning the Byron Nelson last week. The victory was Day's first in five years and provides the latest hint in how the 35-year-old Australian has finally begun shedding back issues and concerns his career might be over. Day climbed to the top of the world rankings in 2015, when he won the PGA Championship, before a steady decline dropped him to 175th a little over a year ago. He's climbed back to No. 20 and enjoyed seven top-10 finishes in his past 16 tournaments.

Nick Senzel hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning, helping the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-1 win over the Rockies 3-1. Colorado's Ezequiel Tovar ended an 0-for-8 skid before breaking up a scoreless game in the bottom of the sixth inning with his third home run of the season. He connected on a 2-1 offering from Brandon Williamson, who was making his major league debut and had retired 14 in a row. Williamson struck out six in 5 2/3 innings and had allowed only a single in the first inning before Tovar hit a 415-foot shot to right-center. Derek Law (3-4) earned the win and Alexis Díaz got three outs for his 10th save. Peter Lambert took the loss.

Luis Robert Jr. homered for the fourth straight game, Gavin Sheets and Jake Burger went deep off Shane Bieber in Chicago’s six-run fifth inning, and the White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 8-3. Lance Lynn allowed three runs — one earned — on seven hits in seven innings. Robert’s solo shot to deep left in the eighth was his AL-leading 12th homer of the season. He became the first White Sox player to homer in four straight games since Matt Davidson in 2017. Sheets’ three-run shot and Burger’s two-run drive were among six straight hits by the White Sox with two outs in the fifth as Chicago jumped ahead 6-0.

The Cleveland Guardians placed All-Star third baseman José Ramírez on the bereavement list and recalled hot-hitting infielder Brayan Rocchio from Triple-A Columbus. The team made the moves ahead of the opener of their three-game series against the White Sox. It’s not yet known how long the defending AL Central champions will be without Ramírez, who is batting .285 with four homers and 22 RBIs. Josh Naylor will take Ramírez’s No. 3 spot in the lineup while Gabriel Arias will start at third in the series opener. This will be Rocchio’s second stint with Cleveland. However, the 22-year-old didn’t make his major league debut when he was brought up in April.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who is working on his return to the field after having gone into cardiac arrest during a game in January, has been selected as the winner of the 2023 George Halas Award. The Professional Football Writers of America announced the 55th winner of the award, which is given to an NFL player, coach or staff member who overcomes adversity to succeed. Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during a nationally televised game on Jan. 2 after making a tackle on a Cincinnati Bengals receiver. He got up but collapsed and had to be resuscitated on the field.

Bryan De La Cruz doubled twice and singled and the Miami Marlins avoided a three-game sweep against Cincinnati with a 3-1 win over the Reds. Activated from the injured list earlier Sunday, Garrett Cooper had two hits and drove in a run for the Marlins, who snapped a five-game home losing skid. Cooper’s RBI double and De La Cruz’s run-scoring single in the seventh broke a 1-1 tie.

Josh Naylor hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning — his third go-ahead homer in three days in that same inning — and the Cleveland Guardians held on for a 4-3 win over the Los Angles Angels. Naylor drove a 2-0 pitch from reliever Carlos Estévez over the wall in right for his latest late-inning heroics. On Friday, he belted a solo homer in the eighth, and his three-run shot highlighted a six-run inning as the Guardians rallied to win 8-6 Saturday. He’s hit an MLB-best eight homers after the eighth since 2021. Naylor’s homer pinned a tough loss on Angels starter Patrick Sandoval, who held the Guardians to five hits in 7 2/3 innings while matching Guardians starter Tanner Bibee, his former high school teammate. Bibee gave up just two singles in 7 2/3 innings.

Brandon Drury’s sacrifice fly capped a two-run rally in the ninth inning by Los Angeles off Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase as the Angels beat the Guardians 5-4 to snap a 10-game losing streak at Progressive Field. Drury’s shot to center off the hard-throwing Clase enabled the Angels to get their first win at Cleveland since Aug. 3, 2018. They had been 1-21 on the road against the Guardians since 2015. The Guardians loaded the bases in the ninth off Carlos Estévez, who struck out Will Brennan for his ninth save. Josh Naylor's 442-foot homer in the eighth had given the Guardians a 4-3 lead.

Jake Fraley homered twice, including a tiebreaking three-run shot in the ninth inning that sent the Cincinnati Reds past the Miami Marlins 7-4. Eury Pérez struck out seven over 4 2/3 innings in his highly anticipated major league debut for Miami. The Marlins promoted the 20-year-old right-hander, the top prospect in their organization, from Double-A Pensacola to start the series opener. The Reds erased a 4-2 deficit on Spencer Steer’s two-run double in the seventh. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Peyton Burdick homered for Miami.

The Cleveland Browns have agreed to acquire three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Za’Darius Smith from the Minnesota Vikings. That's according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it hadn't been announced. The Browns are sending fifth-round picks in 2024 and 2025 to the Vikings for Smith, a sixth-round pick in 2025 and a seventh-rounder in 2026. Smith will be paired on the Browns’ defensive front with All-Pro end Myles Garrett, one of the NFL's best edge rushers. Smith has 54 1/2 career sacks.

Dawand Jones flattened the rumor. Cleveland's massive rookie offensive tackle said a report that came out after the NFL draft was wrong about him. When Jones slipped from the first round to the fourth, there was speculation teams were scared off because they didn't think he had the passion to play. Jones had dreamed of playing in the NBA. However, he was a standout at Ohio State and the Browns believe getting him was a steal. The 6-foot-8, 380-pounder is a project, but he's determined to show the Browns — and his doubters — they made the right choice.

Coach Zac Taylor and the Cincinnati Bengals are looking to get over the hump after again falling short of the Super Bowl victory that has eluded the franchise for its entire existence. The first step of that journey started their rookie minicamp. Cincinnati welcomed its latest batch of draft picks and a group of undrafted free agents into the team’s indoor practice Friday as coach Zac Taylor and his staff began building the foundation for this year’s squad.

The abhorrent word rolled easily off Bob Huggins’ tongue. Not once, but twice. That should’ve been enough to earn him a forced retirement, but college athletics has no shame. So, Huggins is still the men’s basketball coach at West Virginia. A bit poorer, but hardly a pauper. And, yeah, he’ll be suspended for the first three games of next season. But that conveniently allows him to miss blockbuster contests against Missouri State, Monmouth and Jacksonville State before returning just in time for a trip to sunny Fort Myers, Florida. To say Huggins got off lightly is a huge understatement.

A sports integrity monitor has launched a tool to help athletes, coaches and staff anonymously report suspicions about gambling activity to regulators and law enforcement. The tip hotline was announced by U.S. Integrity, a sports data integrity company that played a role in an ongoing investigation into possible wrongdoing involving the University of Alabama baseball team. Earlier this month, Matthew Holt, the president of U.S. Integrity, said the operators of a sportsbook alerted his company to “abnormal activity.” U.S. Integrity alerted state gambling regulators, and Ohio opened an investigation. Alabama fired its baseball coach last week amid an investigation into suspicious bets involving a Crimson Tide game at LSU.

Eduardo Rodriguez struck out eight over seven innings, Javier Báez had two hits and two runs and the Detroit Tigers cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians to win the three-game series. Rodriguez gave up four hits and two walks, allowing only two runners past first base in his sixth straight dominant performance. The left-hander is 4-0 with a 0.43 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings since April 12. Báez singled, doubled and scored twice in the first three innings as the Tigers built a 5-0 lead. In two starts against the Guardians this year, Rodriguez has thrown 15 scoreless innings and earned two wins.

Bob Huggins will keep his job as basketball coach at West Virginia but has agreed to a suspension and pay cut after he used a homophobic slur during a radio show. That’s according to a person with knowledge of the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because a deal was still being finalized. During a call to a Cincinnati radio station Monday, Huggins was asked whether he had a chance of landing an Xavier player from the transfer portal. Huggins then made offensive comments about Xavier fans. He later apologized.

The Mets lost for the 12th time in 15 games and Buck Showalter was ejected for the first time as New York’s manager as Jonathan India drove in three runs in the Cincinnati Reds’ 7-6 win . The Mets (17-19), who scratched starter Max Scherzer because of neck spasms, hit a season-high four home runs but lost for the sixth time in seven games and dropped two games under .500 for the first time since 2021. Francisco Álvarez homered twice, doubling his career big league total and Pete Alonso hit his 12th.

Shane Bieber struck out a season-high nine over six innings, Amed Rosario had an RBI triple among his four hits, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0. Bieber scattered seven hits and walked one. Relievers James Karinchak, Sam Hentges, Trevor Stephan and Emmanuel Clase completed Cleveland’s third shutout of the season. Clase leads the majors with 13 saves in 16 chances. Rosario singled in each of his three at-bats against Detroit starter Michael Lorenzen, then tripled home Will Brennan in the ninth against José Cisnero. The Tigers were shut out for the first time since opening day.

New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer was scratched from his scheduled start against the Cincinnati Reds due to neck spasms. Left-hander David Peterson was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to start the opener of a three-game series. The start would have been Scherzer’s second since a 10-game suspension by Major League Baseball for violating the prohibition on foreign substances. The three-time Cy Young Award winner allowed six runs and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings at Detroit in his return on May 3, leaving the 38-year-old right-hander 2-2 with a 5.56 ERA in five starts this season.

Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr. of Memphis and Milwaukee’s Jrue Holiday and Brook Lopez headlined the NBA’s All-Defensive team. Also voted to the first team Tuesday were Cleveland forward Evan Mobley and Chicago guard Alex Caruso. Jackson, the NBA leader with 3.0 blocked shots per game, received 96 of 100 first-team votes and finished with 195 points for his second All-Defensive team selection. Holiday was just behind him with 94 first-team votes and 192 points, earning a fifth career selection (three firsts, two seconds.) Lopez, the runner-up to Jackson for Defensive Player of the Year, had 185 points and 85 first-team votes.

The Chicago Blackhawks won the NHL draft lottery and the chance to take Connor Bedard long before Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly revealed it on national television. The final lottery ball giving the Blackhawks the opportunity to draft Bedard popped out of a machine 80 minutes earlier. The roughly 20 people in the room to witness the drawing were sequestered there without access to phones or other communication devices until Daly revealed the card with the Blackhawks logo. The entire process emceed by Commissioner Gary Bettman is filmed for posterity. Anaheim, San Jose, Arizona, Washington and St. Louis also had a chance down to the final lottery ball.

Joey Wentz shrugged off giving up a couple quick hits for his first win and Andy Ibañez homered and scored three runs, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 6-2 win over the struggling Cleveland Guardians. Wentz allowed a double and single to start the game before settling in. The left-hander retired 13 of 14 before giving up a pair of walks in the sixth. Ibañez connected in the fifth inning and Riley Greene drove in two runs as the Tigers won for the sixth time in seven games. José Ramírez homered for Cleveland, which has scored three runs or less in 22 of 35 games.

The Chicago Blackhawks have won the NHL draft lottery and the right to select Connor Bedard with the first pick. Chicago had the third-highest odds of winning it at 11.5%. Bedard is considered the top draft-eligible prospect available since Connor McDavid in 2015. Bedard's 72 goals and 143 points with Regina of the Western Hockey League were the most of any junior hockey player in Canada. League-worst Anaheim won the lottery to pick second and choose among forwards Adam Fantilli from Canada, Matvei Michkov from Russia and Leo Carlsson from Sweden at the draft June 28 in Nashville.

Hanser Alberto had four hits, drove in a career-high four RBIs and Chicago scored 11 runs in the second inning to rout the Cincinnati Reds 17-4 on Sunday. The 11 runs are the most for the team in one inning in 16 years and third-most ever for the franchise. The White Sox had 11 runs in the fifth at Kansas City on Sept. 17, 2007. The White Sox who came in batting .176 with runners in scoring position, delivered plenty of big hits against Graham Ashcraft (2-1) in the second, sending 14 batters to the plate. Michael Kopech (1-3) allowed four solo homers by pitched six innings to earn his first victory of the season.

Cleveland’s Cal Quantrill had a no-hit bid broken up with two outs in the seventh and combined on a one-hitter, leading the Guardians over the Minnesota Twins 2-0. Alex Kirilloff got the lone hit with a two-out single in the seventh. Kirilloff hit a 1-0 changeup over second baseman Andrés Giménez, who attempted to make a leaping catch. The ball was picked up by right fielder Will Brennan. Quantrill (2-2) received a standing ovation from the crowd of 17,477 following the hit. He walked Joey Gallo, but struck out José Miranda on three pitches. As he did after working out of a bases-loaded jam in the second, Quantrill pumped his fist as he left the mound as his day ended with another big ovation.

Cleveland’s Cal Quantrill has held the Minnesota Twins hitless through six innings, and the Guardians lead 2-0. The 28-year-old right-hander, a son of former major league pitcher Paul Quantrill, struck out two, walked two and hit a batter. He threw 48 of 77 pitches for strikes. Quantrill’s career high is 109 pitches in a win over the Twins on Sept. 9, 2021. His longest outing in 81 previous big league starts is eight innings against Minnesota last June 29.

Nicolas “Nick” Gilbert, the son of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert who became the team’s good luck charm at NBA draft lotteries, has died. He was 26. A funeral announcement posted by the Ira Kaufman Chapel said Gilbert died Saturday “peacefully at home surrounded by family.” Gilbert was diagnosed as a child with neurofibromatosis (NF1), a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow in the brain, spinal cord and skin. Wearing a signature bow tie and dark-rimmed glasses, Gilbert became a sensation at the 2011 draft lottery. Cleveland wound up with the No. 1 overall pick and used it to select Kyrie Irving, who became an All-Star and later paired with LeBron James to win the championship in 2016.

TJ Friedl hit a three-run homer and a run-scoring triple, helping the Cincinnati Reds top the Chicago White Sox 5-3. Friedl’s third homer — a drive to right-center against Mike Clevinger in the fifth inning — lifted Cincinnati to a 4-3 lead. He drove in Jonathan India with a two-out triple in the seventh. India went 3 for 3 and scored three times. Derek Law got the win, and Alexis Díaz earned his sixth save Hanser Alberto and Seby Zavala homered for Chicago. Clevinger was charged with four runs and six hits in six innings.

Steven Kwan connected for his first home run since last season to snap a seventh-inning tie, sending the Cleveland Guardians to a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins. Kwan muscled a 2-1 pitch from Jorge Alcala over the wall in center field for his first homer since Sept. 25. The surprising, 402-foot drive from their left fielder was just what the Guardians needed with their offense scuffling. It was only Cleveland’s 18th homer this season — and first since April 29. Max Kepler hit a two-run homer and Carlos Correa added a solo shot for the AL Central-leading Twins, who have homered in a team record 18 straight games. Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli was ejected for arguing in the fourth.

White Sox designated hitter Eloy Jiménez was hospitalized due to abdominal pain. Jiménez is on a season-high eight-game hitting streak after going 1 for 4 with a single and two strikeouts in Friday night’s 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He went 3 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs on Thursday. The White Sox have won four of their last five games after a poor April.
