Veteran Sherpa guide Kami Rita has scaled Mount Everest for the 28th time, beating his own record less than a week after setting it. Two guides have been competing with each other for the title of most climbs of the world’s highest peak. Expedition organizer Seven Summits Treks says Kami Rita reached the 29,032-foot summit at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday. His latest climb comes a day after fellow Sherpa guide Pasang Dawa matched his record of 27 trips to the summit. The race for the title began with Pasang Dawa climbing the peak for the 26th time on May 14, equaling Kami Rita’s previous record. Kami Rita went on to the peak three days later for the 27th time.

Elías Díaz homered and doubled to drive in two runs and Jurickson Profar doubled twice to extend his on-base streak to 30 games and drive in another pair as the Colorado Rockies beat the Miami Marlins 5-3 on Monday night. Bryan De La Cruz had four hits for the Marlins, scoring twice and Jacob Stallings had two RBIs on an infield force play and a single. With the score tied 2-all going into the bottom of the sixth inning, Díaz connected for his fourth home run, driving an offering from Edward Cabrera into the left field bleachers. Profar added a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh.

Freddie Freeman’s three-run homer in the fifth inning gave Los Angeles the lead, J.D. Martinez had four hits, including two homers, and the Dodgers rallied to beat the Atlanta Braves 8-6. The Dodgers, who trailed 4-0 in the first, won the opener of a three-game series between the top two teams in the National League. Freeman, a longtime Braves star, made the most of his second Atlanta homecoming with three hits to join Martinez in leading the comeback. Dodgers rookie Gavin Stone allowed five runs on five hits and five walks in four innings in his second start for Los Angeles.

Javier Báez hit a bases-clearing double in the 10th inning for his third hit of the night to lift the Detroit Tigers to an 8-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game series. Matt Vierling had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs for the Tigers. Alex Lange (2-0) earned the victory with two hitless innings of relief. Jose Cisnero picked up his first save. Scott Barlow (1-3) allowed Báez’s winning hit and took the loss.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 32 shots for his first career playoff shutout, Sam Reinhart scored a power-play goal midway through the second period and the Florida Panthers moved one win away from a most improbable trip to the Stanley Cup Final by blanking the Carolina Hurricanes 1-0. Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett had the assists on Reinhart's goal for Florida, which now leads the Eastern Conference final 3-0. The Panthers haven’t played for the Stanley Cup since 1996, but can clinch a trip to the title round with a win in Game 4 on Wednesday.

Stanford’s Rose Zhang has shot a bogey-free, 4-under 68 to become the first women’s golfer to win consecutive national titles and tie the NCAA record for wins in a season. It’s the latest triumph for Zhang, who had already swept the most important amateur titles in women’s golf. Zhang won the U.S. Women’s Amateur in 2020, the U.S. Girls’ Junior in 2021 and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur this April. The 19-year-old from Irvine, California, finished at 10 under. She tied Lorena Ochoa's NCAA records for wins in a season with eight and career wins with 12. Stanford has the top seed for the team competition, which starts Tuesday.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. extended the longest active hitting streak in the majors to 15 games, going 4 for 4 with a homer, double and two RBIs as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3. Pavin Smith also homered for the Diamondbacks, who have won eight of their last 10 games and five of seven on their nine-game trip to Oakland, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott hit solo homers for the Phillies, who have lost six of their last eight games.

Nick Senzel hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and the Cincinnati Reds snapped a four-game losing streak, cooling off the St. Louis Cardinals with a 6-5 victory. Spencer Steer launched an early two-run homer and scored the winning run for the Reds. Ian Gibaut struck out two in a hitless 10th to keep it tied. Paul DeJong homered and drove in four runs for the Cardinals, who had won 11 of 14 since a 10-24 start. St. Louis had the bases loaded in the ninth and two runners aboard in the 10th, but failed to score.

The announced crowd at Tropicana Field was a season-low 8,857. Tampa Bay started the day averaging 18,045, which was 10th in the American League.

Rookie Hunter Gaddis pitched six strong innings for his first major league win and struggling Cleveland catcher Mike Zunino connected for a two-run homer, sending the Guardians over the Chicago White Sox 3-0. Gaddis was recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Columbus and gave the Guardians a badly needed quality start after they were swept over the weekend in New York, losing all three to the Mets by one run. Zunino, who has been a target of fan complaints because he’s not been hitting, belted his third homer in the seventh off reliever Gregory Santos. The White Sox had their three-game winning streak stopped.

The NFL draft will be coming to Green Bay in 2025. The league made the announcement during its spring meetings. The draft and related activities will take place inside and around Lambeau Field and Titletown, the collection of shops and restaurants surrounding the stadium. The NFL began taking the draft out of New York and to various cities starting in 2015. More than 2.2 million people have attended draft festivities since then.

Stefan Wilson fractured a vertebrae during a heavy crash with Katherine Legge in practice for the Indianapolis 500 on Monday. The British driver will not be allowed back into the car for Sunday's race. Wilson was immobilized on a stretcher and wearing a neck brace but gave a thumbs-up as he was loaded into an ambulance and taken to the hospital. Legge was able to climb from the cockpit of her crumpled machine on her own. It was the first wreck in the two-week build-up to the race. It was unclear who will step into Wilson’s car for Sunday, but JR Hildebrand has been at the speedway. He’s made 12 consecutive starts, nearly winning as a rookie in 2011 before finishing second, but could not put together a ride this year.

The Super Bowl will return to the Bay Area in 2026 at the home of the San Francisco 49ers. NFL owners approved the site at their spring meetings. This will be the third time for the big game in the Bay Area. Levi’s Stadium hosted Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara when Denver beat Carolina. The 49ers won Super Bowl 19 at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto when they beat Miami after the 1984 season. The 2026 game will be Super Bowl 60. The next Super Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Carlos Correa’s eventful offseason included a period where the free agent shortstop agreed to a deal with the San Francisco Giants. But an ankle issue led to a failed physical, and the deal with the Giants fell apart. Correa ended up re-signing with Minnesota on a six-year guaranteed deal, much shorter than the 13 years he would have signed for with the Giants. On Monday, Correa faced off against the team he nearly joined in the offseason as San Francisco opened a three-game series at Target Field against Correa and the Twins.

Eric Lauer has joined the growing list of injured Milwaukee Brewers pitchers. The left-handed Lauer has gone on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder impingement. Lauer is 4-5 with a 5.48 ERA is season. Other Brewers starting pitchers already on the injured list are Brandon Woodruff, Wade Miley and Aaron Ashby. The Brewers recalled right-hander Tyson Miller from Triple-A Nashville to fill Lauer’s spot on the roster. The Brewers also returned right-hander Gus Varland to the Los Angeles Dodgers organization after he cleared waivers.

Rookie quarterbacks will get much of the attention this week when most NFL teams hit the field for non-contact practices. Twenty teams kicked off their voluntary organized team activities on Monday and 10 more will do so on Tuesday. Only the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles and the AFC runner-up Cincinnati Bengals aren’t holding workouts this week. Teams are allowed, per the collective bargaining agreement, to hold 10 days of practices without pads and no live contact over a four-week span. They can run 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

Olympic gold medal speedskater Terry McDermott has died at the age of 82. U.S. Speedskating made the announcement, saying McDermott died early Saturday surrounded by his family. The organization did not specify where he died or give a cause. McDermott was an unheralded figure on the speedskating scene when he stunningly won the 500-meter event at the 1964 Innsbruck Games, upsetting Soviet great and reigning Olympic champion Yevgeny Grishin by a half-second. It was the only U.S. gold medal of those Winter Games. McDermott appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” the same night the Beatles made their American television debut.

Newcastle has qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years after drawing with Leicester 0-0 in the English Premier League. It's a milestone moment for a Saudi-controlled club with the resources and ambition to become a major force in European soccer. The point ensures Newcastle cannot be denied a top-four finish heading into its final game of the season at Chelsea on Sunday. Leicester’s campaign-closing game has far more riding on it. The team is still in the relegation zone and needs a win at home to West Ham to avoid falling into the second-tier Championship seven years after winning the Premier League.

A bad day for Juventus turned worse when a 4-1 loss at Empoli saw its hopes of qualifying for the Champions League implode. Juventus was hit by a 10-point penalty for false accounting shortly before its Serie A match kicked off. That dropped it five points behind fourth-place AC Milan. It hosts Milan next weekend in one of its final two matches. Roma is a point above Juventus after drawing 2-2 with Salernitana. The visitors twice took the lead through Antonio Candreva and Boulaye Dia but was twice pegged back by goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Nemanja Matić.

The Vegas Golden Knights certainly know how to rally when they've fallen behind in these NHL playoffs. The Knights have trailed in 11 of their 13 games this postseason, including 10 times when the opposing team scored first. But they have a 2-0 series lead over the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final. Game 3 is Tuesday night in Dallas. The Stars scored first in both games at Vegas before losing in overtime. Vegas has eight comeback victories this postseason. That includes their last four games to match an NHL record for the longest streak.

Juventus has been hit with a fresh 10-point penalty and is at risk of not qualifying for next year’s Champions League. The latest punishment for false accounting sees Juventus fall from second spot in Serie A to seventh. It leaves the Bianconeri five points behind fourth-placed AC Milan. Juventus was handed a 15-point penalty in January while several members of its former board were also given bans from soccer activities. The points deduction was suspended last month on an appeal to the country’s highest sports court and referred back to the soccer federation’s appeals court for a new trial.

Blown out in Game 3, facing elimination in Game 4, tasked with engineering the sort of comeback that no team in their league has ever pulled off before. This may sound familiar to Boston fans. A day after a debacle in Miami to fall into a 3-0 deficit in these Eastern Conference finals, the Celtics will try to extend the series and at least delay a Heat celebration in Game 4 on Tuesday night.

For more than a century, the Indianapolis 500 has been the pinnacle of IndyCar racing. For nearly a decade, it also counted double in the season championship. But in February, series officials announced they were ditching the double points system and would instead award the same points total for every other race on the schedule. The result could make an already tight points chase even tighter later in the season.

Roger Penske couldn’t ask for much more in the buildup to the Indianapolis 500 following the fastest weekend in 107 years of “The Greatest Spectacle of Racing.” Alex Palou set the fastest qualifying mark in Indianapolis 500 history at 234.217 mph to become the first Spaniard to win the pole and make Chip Ganassi Racing the first team to win three consecutive poles since Penske won four-straight from 1988 through 1991. Palou will line up alongside Rinus VeeKay of Ed Carpenter Racing and Felix Rosenqvist of Arrow McLaren in the fastest front row at a 234.180 mph average.

England has beaten Tunisia 1-0 and France collapsed against an organized South Korea 2-1 at the Under-20 World Cup in Argentina. Dane Scarlett’s first-half header proved to be enough for England in La Plata. Tunisia had few opportunities to equalize during their Group E match. France’s nerves were also evident against South Korea in Mendoza. South Korea opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through Lee Seung-won and doubled its lead in the second half from a Lee Young-jun header. France finally scored from the spot thanks to Alan Virginius.
