Women’s soccer loses to No. 1 Tar Heels

The college women’s powerhouse of No. 1 UNC-Chapel Hill shut out NC State women’s soccer 4-0 on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Dail Soccer Stadium. Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas tied her career high with eight saves, and she faced a whopping 24 shots while the Wolfpack offense only managed to fire off two.

The red-and-white also broke its attendance record for the second time this season — 3,972 fans flocked to Raleigh to watch the game, blowing the previous record of 2,506 out of the water.

Men’s soccer splits two games

NC State men’s soccer hosted two opponents of dramatically different skill levels this week: the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs and the No. 15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Pack took down Gardner-Webb 3-1 before falling by the same score against the Fighting Irish.

Four different athletes scored this week: junior forward Luke Hille scored against Notre Dame, and freshman defender Lawson Abass, freshman forward Hakim Karamoko and graduate forward Scotty Taylor scored against the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Abass’ goal — a header that found the back of the net despite the two defenders in his path — was the first of his collegiate career.

Football loses to Louisville

NC State football fell to the undefeated Louisville Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 30 under the lights at Carter-Finley Stadium. Despite establishing a double-digit lead before the break, the Pack lost 13-10 in a game where both teams put on a stellar defensive performance.

The contest got off to a slow start, with the two squads combining for six consecutive punts before either team made an attempt to score. The Wolfpack picked up some steam in the second, completing its only two scoring plays of the game with a rushing touchdown from redshirt junior running back Delbert Mimms III and a field goal by graduate kicker Brayden Narveson. But after that, the red-and-white went cold and the Louisville offense picked up just enough to secure the win.

Volleyball continues to dominate

NC State volleyball notched two ACC wins this week to move to 3-1 in conference play. The Pack swept Notre Dame with ease, and it didn’t falter when it faced a much more challenging opponent in No. 5 Louisville, collecting a 3-1 victory. The win over the Cardinals marks the program’s first-ever win against a top-five opponent and is just its second win over a ranked team in program history.

Defense was the name of the game against the Fighting Irish — the red-and-white tallied 22 block assists over the course of the game and won 3-0 despite an average offensive showing. Against the Cardinals, the Pack was firing on all cylinders, with junior opposite hitter Amanda Rice and sophomore outside hitter Ava Brizard leading the team with a combined 30 kills. NC State flexed its versatility this week by displaying both its defensive and offensive prowess.
